CARTOUCHE CARDS

Cartouche Cards - an effective oracle
I bought my first set of these excellent cards about fifteen years ago, drawn by the Egyptian imagery. I "played" with them for a few years before starting to use them in my professional readings, and since then my understanding of the cards has deepened considerably. As with any predictive tool, it is necessary to establish a resonance with the cards, and I've found that this has developed more readily for me with Cartouche cards than with the Tarot's Major Arcana and the Runes, both of which I have used in the past. Over the years, Cartouche cards have slotted themselves on to an inner framework in my own depths, and the meanings that the cards reveal to me now vary slightly from those in the book "The Way of Cartouche". Clients are continually astonished at the accuracy of the cards and the helpful advice that can be drawn from them, and many are delighted by their attractive appearance, too.

Having worn out two decks of Cartouche cards, I am now in the market for a third!

Cartouche Cards
I have found the book that accompanies the cards to be very informative. It gives great detail into the relationship of ancient Egypt mythological characters, and the relationships they shared with each other. The readings abtained by the cards are very accurate, and helpful in making decisions, or seeking direction.

The Castles of Scotland

Castle Buffs Dream of a Handbook like this one...
Want to find the ancient ruins of your family's Scottish history? Then arm yourself with a copy of this book by Martin Coventry and a map from the local Ordinance Surveys and you are on your way to discovering real history that you can see, hear, feel, touch...Martin is constantly updating his information; receptive to additions and changes from all sources to his unique work. A real treasure of information; I would not be without one as I recently wrote a first of three books on the medieval Douglas Clan. A fine research tool for the professional or amateur castle "buff."

excellent guide to Scottish castles
This book is an excellent guide to Scottish castles and certainly the most comprehensive book I have seen on this subject. It goes into great detail about 2500 sites of castles and fortified houses going back down the centuries. It gives lots of information about each site including a description , location , history of ownership and opening times . Most castles in Scotland are either owned by Historic Scotland , the National Trust or private individuals. There is probably a lot more in this book than you could ever imagine about Scottish castles. I have some pictures of 20 Scottish castles on my website http://www.castlepictures.com but the scope of this book is way beyond that .

Cat Who Wore a Pot on Her Head

Long-time friend of the cat with the pot on her head
This is the best book ever written! I am 20 now and still in love with "Bendemolina, Bendemolina, the cat with the pot on her head". This was my ratty dog-eared most favorite book of all time when I was little--it got read every night. It became a part of our family traditions (i.e. anytime I wasn't listening I got called a Bendemolina). By the way, I can't remember if that's how you spell the kitty's name, but that's how it sounds--and wow, that book has great sounds! If you buy this book, I can guarantee that your children will love it. Finding that it is still in print, I'm going to buy it for my boyfriend's two small sons. Yay! More moop on the feep!

Exponentially Increase Your Silliness Quotient:
Hey! Don't blame us for enriching phonemic awareness of pre- and early readers with this hilarious story. That's what's happening at our house because our six year-old wants to hear this story every night. When the eldest of 10 kittens wears a shiny pot as a hat, she has a hard time hearing her mother's instructions. Highly original and nonsensical household chaos ensues. The wacky rhyming text in this inventive plot does not fail to induce uncontrolled giggling. (Our favorite: "Mup the moop on the feep?") Witty illustrations highlight the absurdity of each situation when the cat with the pot on her head repeats what she thought she was told. Depending on your point of view, the moral of the story could either be to always or to never wear a pot on your head!

AN UNKNOWN JEWEL
WHEN I PURCHASED THIS BOOK, I BOUGHT IT MAINLY TO ADD TO MY COLLECTION OF ISAAC ASIMOV NOVELS AND ANTHOLOGIES. I WAS SURPRISED AND PLEASED TO FIND OUT THAT IT WAS ONE OF HIS BEST ANTHOLOGIES, AT LEAST IN MY MIND. THE STORIES SELECTED BY ASIMOV AND HIS TWO CO-EDITORS, MARTIN GREENBURGH AND CHARLES WAUGH, WERE RICH IN CHARACTERIZATION AND THE STORYLINES WERE SPELLBINDING, EVEN IF IT WAS HARD TO BELIEVE THAT MANY OF THESE SITUATIONS WOULD OR COULD EVER OCCUR, BUT SUCH IS FANTASY! ANOTHER REASON I , ALONG WITH THOSE I LENT THIS BOOK TO, ENJOYED IT WAS THE FACT THAT MANY OF THE AUTHORS WHOSE WORKS WERE SELECTED WERE OBSCURE; NO ONE I KNEW HAD HEARD OF THEM. BUT THE MAIN REASON WAS THE FACT THAT MOST, IF NOT ALL OF THE STORIES DID NOT END ON A DOWN NOTE. THEY ALWAYS CONTAINED SORT OF HOPE OF SURVIVAL. I READ THIS BOOK TO PIECES, AND WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS OUT OF PRINT, AND NOT LIKELY TO BE RE-ISSUED. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK, IF YOU CAN FIND A COPY. SURE HOPE I CAN!

A few things to think about
The stories in this book range from not likely to frighteningly real--the ways that humans are capable of destroying themselves are depicted in accurate detail. A must read (again)...if only I could find a copy!

A Century of Science Fiction 1950-1959 : The Greatest Stories of the Decade
Published in Hardcover by Fine Communications (February, 1997)
Authors: Robert Silverberg and Martin Harry Greenberg

Fantastic collection of stories
Last year I picked up a copy of "A Century of Horror" at my local Barnes & Noble store. It was so good I bought others in the series, including Century of Science Fiction and A Century of Fantasy. All are excellent. Silverberg and Greenberg did a superb job of selecting top notch stories, including stories by Fritz Lieber, Ray Bradbury, Isaac Asimov, Philip Dick and James Blish. If you like Science Fiction and you like the short story format, this is a must-have for your collection.

Very good SF Collection
This collection of SF shorts from the 1950's is one of the best collections of it's kind. Highly recommended for folks who like good SF.

Chameleons Are Cool

Did You Know.....
Did you know that there are around 120 different kinds of chameleons, that their eyes move separately and their very long tongues have a sticky tip at the end? Did you know that chameleons are lizards, that some are the size of small cats and that they change colors when they're angry or too hot or cold or sick...but not to match their surroundings? Martin Jenkins loves chameleons and his enthusiasm is infectious. He's authored a marvelous book full of fun and interesting facts that's perfect for all young nature lovers. His enjoyable, conversational text is complimented by Sue Shields colorful, expressive artwork, that will mesmerize youngsters with its close-up attention to detail. Written for kids 5-9, Chameleons are Cool is a winner!

"Chameleons Are Cool" is COOL!
In our elementary school library, not many non-fiction books make it as successful read-aloud books. This is one of them.

Primary age students beg for this title. Both the brightly colored, humorous illistrations and the light conversational tone of the text grab the interest of the children. I'm continually amazed at how many facts about chameleons are slipped into this cheerful picture book, like "they change color when they're angry, or when they're too cold or too hot, or when they're sick."

Many pages have additional facts worked into the illustrations, such as "Chameleons usually get sick and die of kept as pets."

This book is to be recommended not only as a great read-aloud, but as a good source of information for students doing a report on chameleons. It even has a helpful index.

Chance
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (1999)
Authors: Joseph Conrad and Martin Ray
Average review score:

Excellent
This book is just perfect. It's very well written. Conrad shows an understanding of the predicament of women of his time. Conrad advances the plot though the voice of the characters, who tell a story, which involves another character telling a story, etc. At one point the tale is six levels deep; but such is the skill of Conrad that you do not notice and are never lost. One of Conrad's two or three best. A book I was sad to end because I was enjoying it so much.

Take the Chance and read this wonderful novel
I cannot believe that there are no customer reviews already for this spectacular novel - full of intruiging situations and wonderful characters - certainly the best Conrad female character I have read. Conrad is a wonderful writer in style and the manner in which he tells a yarn - how then has this novel become so 'lost'? It has wonderful lines ('Don't be in a hurry to thank me,' says he. 'The voyage isn't finished yet.' p22 Oxford World Classics), great insights (women respond to the smallest things, which immediately had me nodding in agreement from my own experience), spectacular descriptions ('Yes, I gave up the walk [along a cliff top with the intention of killing herself],' she said slowly before raising her downcast eyes. When she did so it was with an extraordinary effect. It was like catching sight of a piece of clear blue sky, of a stretch of open water. And for a moment I understood the desire of that man to whom the sea ans sky of his solitary life had appeared suddenly incomplete without that glance which seemed to belong to both of them. p231). The characters are admirable in behaviour sometimes, victims sometimes, regrettable in behaviour sometimes, or just plain confused - just like real people. But one thing I really like is the way the narrator of the story is an observer, barely a participant of the events being described.

This may not be the perfect novel, but I urge you not to miss it. The chapter 'On the Pavement' by itself is worth the read!

worth buying
The book is about a lamb who's adopted by the farmer and the farmer's sheepdog and ends up picking up the sheepdog's shepherding habits. My young kids (2.5 and 4.5) love it. They love to hear it over and over again and we've had our copy for a year now--they're still dragging it out. I almost have it memorized, but not quite, so I have to get a hardcover version since our softcover copy is now worn out. I recommend it to anyone with young kids. The illustrations are very nice also.

Absolutely excellent children's book
I bought this book for my friend's children, and they loved it. They read it over and over at bedtime. I would recommend it to anyone.

The Chess Competitors' Handbook

Authors: B. KaZiC and Martin Morrison
Average review score:

A very good book
I am chess arbiter and I believe that this book can be available for basic knowledge of all the world's arbiters. Include a lot of real cases available for training, a complete description of ratings system, swiss system and others tournament regulations. My personal recommendation for all the arbiters.

Chess Competitors' Handbook
With the remarkable increase in the number of tournaments and weekend congresses over the last decade, the understanding of the Laws of Chess, and the way they work in practice, is of paramount importance to all chess players. To date, organizers and participants have had no authority to which they could refer, but this gap has now been filled with this book. The book also includes a detailed explanation of the FIDE (World Chess Federation) Rating System and the method by which International Titles are awarded, and all tournament directors will benefit from the torough coverage afforded to the various forms of the Swiss System and other tournament expenses.

eye candy for your visual palette
This book is a fabulous deal. With about 75% of the book being full page color photographs of Chihuly's work, this volume really helped me discover who this artist is and what his work is all about. The reproductions are of the highest quality as is the art. The two essays opening the book are well written, allowing beginners and veterens of glass alike to pick up info about the artist, his technique, and his place in history. Notes from Chihuly and his team are provided to give a personal inside look at the art, which I found to be very interesting. Even if you don't know anything about glass, buy this as a coffee table book. I guarantee it will make you look culturally saavy and will be a great conversation starter. Best of all, if you'd rather look than read, this is definitely the volume for you. It's like taking a world tour of Chihuly's glass installations, art that is accessible and fun to view for all.

Chihuly Projects
This book is best described by the words color and form. Many collectors of glass have discovered Chihuly and his freedom of color and form but not many can travel to see his installations all over the world. This book is so well done it satisfies the eye with the color and forms but the full size of the works of Dale Chihuly are only realized in person,so let it suffice to enjoy the best book on Dale Chihuly and his works. This is excellent photography of Art Glass at its finest.
